Dubrovnik: 1 day, 3 ways

How to spend a day in Dubrovnik

Published on 21 Aug 2026

Dubrovnik may be one of Croatia’s most visited destinations, and once you experience the city for yourself, it’s easy to see why. From centuries of history and breathtaking coastal scenery to incredible food and unforgettable experiences, there’s plenty to discover, even if you’re only visiting for the day. To help you make the most of your time ashore, we’ve put together three one-day itineraries, each offering a different way to explore Dubrovnik.

Things to do in Dubrovnik

Option one:

  • Take in panoramic views from the Dubrovnik Cable Car
  • Walk the ancient City Walls
  • Enjoy lunch on Stradun

Take in panoramic views from the Dubrovnik Cable Car

A ride on the Dubrovnik Cable Car is one of the city’s most popular experiences. Carrying up to 32 passengers at a time, it glides 778 metres to the summit of Mount Srđ, rewarding visitors with spectacular views over the Old Town, the Adriatic Sea and surrounding islands. ROL Cruise team member Olivia recently visited Dubrovnik on a cruise and found the cable car ot be one of the highlights of her trip. Here’s what she had to say:

"A cruise to Dubrovnik is incomplete without summiting Mount Srđ on Dubrovnik's cable car. The journey to the top takes less than ten minutes and offers breathtaking views of the city's Old Town along the way. Once we reached the upper station, we spent some time on the viewing platform enjoying Dubrovnik from a different perspective. It was lovely to see the distinctive line of the city walls, kayakers heading out on adventures and boats sailing over to Lokrum Island. I'd highly, highly recommend making sure to tick the cable car off your list!"

If you have more time in the city, you might choose to visit in the evening and watch as the sky transforms. There is also a famous dining spot next to the upper cable car station, a great place to grab a bite to eat and a glass of wine before descending back down to the bottom.

Walk the ancient City Walls

After taking in Dubrovnik from above, it’s time to experience it from a whole new angle. Encircling the Old Town for almost two kilometres, this remarkable route takes you past towers, bastions and fortresses that once protected the city from attack. Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic views over the rooftops while gaining an insight into Dubrovnik’s fascinating history.

Enjoy lunch on Stradun

After a morning spent discovering Dubrovnik’s most iconic attractions, head to Stradun for a well-earned lunch. As the city’s bustling main street, it’s lined with cafés and restaurants serving everything from fresh seafood and traditional Croatian dishes, such as crni rižot (black risotto), to light bites and sweet treats. You might prefer to dine outside and watch the world go by, pop into one of the coffee shops, or browse local shops and boutiques for souvenirs. No matter how you choose to spend your time here, it’s the perfect place to recharge.

Option two:

  • Step into the world of Game of Thrones
  • Explore the impressive Fort Lovrijenac
  • Watch the sunset from Buža Bar

Step into the world of Game of Thrones

From Cersei Lannister’s infamous Walk of Shame to the familiar streets of King’s Landing, Dubrovnik is home to some of Game of Thrones’ most memorable filming locations. Even if you’ve never watched the hit TV series, it’s hard to miss the city’s connection to the award-winning fantasy drama. Dubrovnik’s beautifully preserved Old Town became the backdrop for King’s Landing, the fictional capital of the Seven Kingdoms, with its ancient streets, imposing walls and historic forts appearing throughout the show. Guided walking tours take visitors to many of the most recognisable filming locations, often sharing behind-the-scenes stories and revealing how some of Dubrovnik’s most famous landmarks were transformed for the screen. Whether you’re a devoted fan or simply curious to see the locations for yourself, it’s a fantastic way to explore the city. If a Game of Thrones tour isn’t for you, there are plenty of other guided walks that showcase Dubrovnik’s fascinating past and impressive architecture.

Sample the flavours of Croatia

Experiencing Croatia isn’t just about visiting historic landmarks and admiring the views. It’s also about discovering the country’s rich culinary heritage. The Old Town is home to a fantastic mix of traditional konobas, family-run restaurants, welcoming wine bars and charming cafés, each offering a taste of authentic Dalmatian cuisine. Fresh seafood features on many menus, while local favourites such as pašticada, a slow-cooked beef stew traditionally served with homemade gnocchi, are well worth trying. If you’re after something lighter, opt for a platter of local cheeses, cured meats and olives, accompanied by a glass of Croatian wine.

Watch the sunset from Buža Bar

If you have enough time in the evening, round off your day at one of Dubrovnik’s most iconic hidden gems. Tucked into the cliffs just outside the city walls, Buža Bar is reached through a small doorway in the Old Town’s southern wall, rewarding those who find it with unforgettable views. Arrive early to secure a good spot, order a refreshing drink and watch as the setting sun casts a golden glow over the sea.

Option three:

  • Discover Dubrovnik from the water
  • Relax on Banje Beach
  • Stroll around Dubrovnik’s Old Port

Discover Dubrovnik from the water

Kayaking has become widely regarded as one of Dubrovnik’s must-do experiences, combining adventure with some of the city’s most spectacular coastal scenery. Guided tours take you along the ancient city walls before continuing past dramatic cliffs, hidden caves, and secluded beaches, with many stopping at Betina Cave Beach for a swim. If you’d prefer to stay dry, a range of boat trips also depart from the Old Port.

Relax on Banje Beach

After your time on the water, slow the pace at nearby Banje Beach. Just a short walk from the Old Town, this popular pebble beach is the perfect place to cool off with a swim, stretch out beneath the Croatian sunshine or simply listen to the gentle sound of the waves. Beach bars and cafés are close by if you’d like to stop for a refreshing drink or light bite before continuing your afternoon.

Stroll around Dubrovnik’s Old Port

Finish your day with a leisurely stroll around Dubrovnik’s historic Old Port. Once the centre of the city’s maritime trade, it’s now a charming harbour where fishing boats, yachts and excursion vessels come and go throughout the day. Wander along the waterfront, browse the nearby shops or settle into a waterside café.
